ISO 9001 is quoted constantly and explained rarely. It is not a product rating and it is not a promise that nothing will go wrong. It is a standard for how an organisation documents and repeats its own process.
What the standard actually governs
ISO 9001 sets requirements for a quality management system: defined processes, records that prove those processes ran, and a mechanism for correcting work that falls outside them.
On a fabrication job that shows up as a written specification, a record of what was made and when, and a defined route for handling a non-conformance.
What it does not tell you
It does not tell you a vendor is fast, well-priced, or good at design. It tells you there is a system behind the work, which is exactly what matters when something needs to be traced a year later.
How to test the claim
Ask what documentation you receive at handover and ask to see the format. A vendor operating the system can show you an example in minutes. A vendor treating the certificate as decoration cannot.
